Poddio

Here you will find the most frequently asked questions about Poddio. Just click on a question to view the answer.

Does Poddio work on the iPod Touch?

Yes, Poddio can work with both versions of the iPod touch. However, you need to use an external microphone since these devices do not have a built-in mic.

Please see our recommendations for external mics in the list below.

Can I use an external microphone with my iPhone or iPod touch?

Yes, there are several choices of external microphones that you can use, depending on which device you have.

The iPhone and both versions of iPod touch can work with iPod-compatible microphones that attach to the 30-pin Docking port, such as : Blue Mikey, Belkin TuneTalk, Macally iVoice Pro and Griffin iTalk Pro.

The iPhone and iPod touch (2nd generation) can also be used with microphones that attach to the headset jack, such as : iPhone-compatible headsets; headset adapters, from Griffin, Shure or Monster; or the soon to be released VeriCorder Mini-Mic.

The first generation iPod touch can only use a mic attached to the 30-pin Docking port. The other port is only a headphone jack, not a headset jack.

How do I get back to the Home screen to end an editing session ?

The Toolbars on both of the Editing screens can be scrolled left and right to show all of the command buttons. There are too many buttons to show all at once.

Flick the Toolbar all the way to the left and you will see the Home button near the end on the right (it looks like a house). When you press that button your editing session will end and you will return to the Poddio Home screen.

Make sure that you save your Audio project first, if you want to keep it.

Can I control the audio input level when recording with Poddio?

No. Currently, the audio input levels are preset within the iPhone device and you don’t have any direct control over it. However, our tests show that these levels seem to work in most circumstances.

Please note that a couple of the external microphones that connect to the 30-pin Docking port do have Auto-Gain functions or Gain control switches. (See list above)

What do I do if I have a phone call come in while I am recording?

If a phone call comes in while you are recording, the iPhone will ask you if you want to ignore it or answer it. If you ignore it, the recording will continue, but you will have an interruption in the audio of your recording.

If you answer the phone call, your recording session will stop and your audio will be saved with a default “Date-Time” name.

We recommend that you put the iPhone in Airplane mode first, if you are doing an important recording. This will prevent any interruptions of your recording.

What is the difference between Recordings and Audio Files in my File Manager?

Recordings are the raw files that you record. They are saved in the CAF format, which is the iPhone default. This allows for very quick saving so you are ready to record again in a few seconds.

The Audio files are your edited files that are saved in either WAV or AIFF for exporting to your computer. You can save Recordings directly to WAV or AIFF, if you wish, but it takes a little longer to save.

How can I listen to my recordings?

You can listen through the speakers in the iPhone, or better yet, through a pair of headphones or an external speaker.

You can also download your Recordings and Audio files to your computer and listen to them there (please see the Manual for details).

Can I control the audio quality of the recordings Poddio makes?

Not yet. Poddio currently records audio at CD quality in order to make the best quality recordings for you. The data is captured and stored as 16 bit PCM at 44.1 KHz sample rate. When you download the audio to your computer, iTunes can convert this to a variety of compressed formats for you.

We do intend to add the option to record in compressed formats in future versions of Poddio. However, that raises a number of issues around how to allow editing of audio files with different formats.

How do I Rename or Delete Recordings and Audio files saved on my iPhone?

Press the ‘Edit List’ button on the File Manager screen, and then select the file you wish to Rename or Delete.

Can I record a phone call?

No. Apple does not allow third-party programs to operate while a phone call is in progress on the iPhone.

How much can I record or what is the recording capacity of the iPhone?

The basic recording capacity of the iPhone depends on how much data you have already stored on the device. Poddio files take up about 5.3 megabytes per minute of recording. Your edited Audio files will take up space at the same rate.

If you are using a 16GB iPhone with about 8GB of free space, you can record and store up to 26 hours of audio with Poddio.

We do recommend that you download your Recordings and/or Audio files to your computer for safekeeping and to make room for more recordings :-)

Will I lose my recordings when I upgrade my version of Poddio to the latest version?

We have tried to ensure that upgrades to Poddio will not cause you to lose any audio files that are in the Poddio “sandbox” (as Apple calls it).

However, we do recommend that you back up your iPhone with iTunes first, before upgrading any program, just to be safe.

How do I share my audio files with my computer or another Poddio user?

We have included a Web Sharing function in Poddio that allows you to easily download your audio files with your computer browser, or with another iPhone running Poddio, over your WiFi network.

From the File Manager screen, press ‘Share Files’ to go to the Sharing screen and then start the Server on your device. A pop-up message will tell you how to connect to your server with your computer browser (either Mac or PC).

A second device running Poddio can also connect to your server if they go to the Sharing screen and then start the Poddio Browser function.

You can make the connections to your device secure by requiring a UserName and Password, if you wish.

Please check our Users Guide for details.

Can I upload audio files from my computer into Poddio ?

Not at this time. This raises the issue of how to manage the editing of audio files with different formats and sample rates. The iPhone can only handle certain audio formats and encodings at this time.

We do plan to allow uploading of some file types in the future, but we need to develop specific screening and control protocols first.

Can I send my audio files to my friends?

Yes you can… there are a couple of ways.

You can transfer the files to your computer then copy them or e-mail them.

You can also share files directly with friends who are running Poddio on their iPhone, using our wireless File Sharing system.

Please consult the User Guide for details.

In the future versions of Poddio you will be able to e-mail audio files directly to your friends from your iPhone or iPod touch.

Can I download audio to my computer when I am away from my home network ?

Yes, it is possible to connect your iPhone to your laptop using an Ad-Hoc network (computer to computer) without a local router being involved.

You need to use your computer to initiate the Ad-Hoc network and then the iPhone can join it.

How big an audio file can I email to a friend?

One of the biggest issues you will face is that email services put a restriction on the size of attachments that you can send. Most email systems restrict attachments to less than 10 megabytes.

You can use iTunes to convert your files to MP3 format first, which will significantly reduce the size of your file. This will allow you to send a much longer audio file.

We will be implementing a media forwarding service in the near future. This will allow you to upload large audio files to our service and then email a link to your friends so they can download the file later. Please stay tuned …

How can I put my audio files on Facebook or MySpace?

At the moment you have to transfer the files to your computer before you can upload them. In future versions you’ll be able to post directly to many favourite sites.

Can I record in stereo?

Not at this time. It’s on the wish list for future versions.

Can Poddio edit audio files I downloaded from iTunes ?

No. Apple does not allow any third-party program to access their iTunes library. Programs like Poddio can only work with files they create or import themselves.

Can I use this on my Blackberry or other smartphones?

Not yet. But we are planning to develop versions of Poddio for other platforms in the future.

What are my legal rights in terms of recording?

Law Courts… Copyright… public vs. private property…

You legal beagles will have to do a little research. It depends on where you live and the laws you live under.

In Canada you can’t take a recording device into a court room. In most jurisdictions in the US, you can.

If you are standing on a sidewalk (public property) you are generally okay, but that doesn’t include the local mall. Although there is an open invitation to the public, it is still private property and you must have permission to do any recording there.

In some places it is okay to record other people without them knowing about it. In other places, that’s illegal.

Check your local laws. Better yet, just ask people first if you can record them. Then it is legal.

How do I request a feature or report a bug in the program?

Please send us an e-mail and let us know what you think would be a neat addition or improvement to Poddio. If you find a bug, let us know as quickly as possible and we will send the hounds in to find the problem and squash it. Either way, we thank you for your feedback. ;-)
